ALBUM STORY

WHEN I WROTE THE FOLLOWING SONGS, OR, RATHER THE BULK OF THEM, I LIVED ALONE,.......umm.....I DIGRESS.....LET ME START AGAIN.  AFTER PURPOSEFULLY GIVING UP WRITING (around 1998) I ALLOWED MY FOCUS TO GO ELSEWHERE.  I BEGAN TO GAIN EMPLOYMENT AS A GUITARIST WITH CHARLIE ROBISON AND CONTINUED TO IMMERSE MYSELF IN THE MUSIC OF THE SIXTIES AND SEVENTIES.  I "DISCOVERED" SUCH AMAZING ARTISTS THAT HAD SOMEHOW ELUDED MY AURAL GRASP THROUGHT THE YEARS.  ARTISTS LIKE IAN HUNTER (THE MISSING LINK BETWEEN DYLAN AND BOWIE, AS MY PAL/MENTOR CHUCK PROPHET SO ELOQUENTLY PUT IT), SHUGGIE OTIS (THE PRECURSOR TO PRINCE AND LENNY KRAVITZ), BADFINGER, THE JAMES GANG, THE ISLEY BROTHERS, DOUG SAHM, BETTY DAVIS AND MANY OTHERS.  EACH OPENED UP NEW PATHWAYS OF ARTISTIC EXPRESSION ALONGSIDE THE ONES I CONTINUED TO STUDY: BEATLES, STONES, DYLAN, GEORGE HARRISON, WORLD PARTY AND WARREN ZEVON.  WHILE STEEPING IN THE CLASSICS, SO TO SPEAK, I BEGAN TO RETURN TO WRITING AND THESE SONGS CONSTITUTE THE ALBUM TOURMALINE.


ONCE I HAD ACCUMULATED A FEW  SONGS, I DECIDED TO RECORD SOME DEMOS WITH THE HELP OF MY FRIEND RON FLYNT.  I RECORDED SEVERAL OF THE SONGS THAT ENDED UP ON TOURMALINE, THOUGH THEY EVOLVED CONSIDERABLY THROUGH THE ALBUM RECORDING PROCESS WHICH TOOK SEVERAL YEARS.  YES, YEARS!  I ORIGINALLY DECIDED TO RECORD THIS ALBUM TO ALLOW MYSELF A CHANCE TO PRODUCE AND PLAY GUITAR IN A FASHION IN WHICH I HADN'T YET BEEN ABLE TO IN A RECORDING ENVIRONMENT.  I WANTED THE SONG TO BE SERVED FIRST AND FOREMOST AND THE VOCAL TO BE THE CENTER OF EACH SONIC ENVIRONMENT.  THIS GOES AGAINST THE PREDOMINANT APPROACH IN LOW-BUDGET RECORDING IN WHICH THE BASS AND DRUMS ARE RECORDED FIRST AND THEN INSTRUMENTS ARE OVERDUBBED AND FINALLY, VOCALS ARE PLACED ON TOP OF THIS.  I WANTED MORE ROOM FOR MY VOICE AND DECIDED TO ACHIEVE THIS BY RECORDING THE SONGS TO A DRUM MACHINE OR DRUM LOOP WITH AN ACOUSTIC GUITAR AND VOCAL IN MOST CASES. SEVERAL OF THE SONGS ON TOURMALINE INCLUDE THESE ORIGINAL VOCALS.  I WAS GOING FOR INTIMATE VOCAL PERFORMANCES IN THE MIDST OF OFTEN GRANDIOSE MUSICAL COLLAGES.  I THEN LAYERED INSTRUMENTS, SOMETIMES BASS, SOMETIMES GUITARS AND SOMETIMES KEYBOARDS.  EACH TIME TRYING TO PULL THE SONG IN A DIRECTION THAT I FELT IT NEEDED TO GO.  BECAUSE I FUNDED THIS ALBUM, THERE WERE OFTEN PERIODS OF WEEKS OR MONTHS IN BETWEEN RECORDING SESSIONS.  DURING THIS DOWN TIME, I'D INEVITABLY RESHAPE MY IDEAS AND APPROACHES TO EACH SONG, OFTEN PUSHING IT IN A WHOLE NEW DIRECTION.  MANY MUSICIANS WERE BROUGHT IN FOR THESE RECORDING SESSIONS AND A FEW OF THEIR PERFORMANCES DIDN'T MAKE THE FINAL ALBUM AS DECISIONS WERE MADE TO ALTER THE DIRECTION OF SONGS.  THIS IS IN NO WAY DUE TO THE PERFORMANCES.  SIMPLY A MATTER OF CHOICES.  I WAS SO LUCKY AND BLESSED TO HAVE HAD SUCH GREAT PLAYERS PLAY SO WELL ON THIS ALBUM.  THERE ARE SO MANY THINGS THAT CAN GO WRONG IN THE RECORDING PROCESS AND I EXPERIENCED THE MOST BENIGN LEVEL OF CATASTROPHES DURING THE MAKING OF TOURMALINE.  FORTUNE SMILED ON MY HARD DRIVES THROUGHOUT THE PROCESS. 

DANA MYZER AND FROSTY PLAYED DRUMS ON THESE SESSIONS AFTER THE SONGS WERE DEVELOPED ENOUGH.  THIS DEVELOPMENT INVOLVED EDITING SONG FORMS, RECORDING VOCALS, GUITARS, BASS, KEYBOARDS....BASICALLY GIVING THE SONGS JUST ENOUGH IDENTITY FOR THE DRUMMER TO  LOCK INTO A GROOVE AND PROVIDE SOME SUPPORT FOR THE SONG TO EMERGE FURTHER. I'VE GOT TO SAY THAT THIS PROVIDED EXACTLY WHAT I WAS SEARCHING FOR. I MUST ADMIT, A FELLOW MUSICIAN/PRODUCER EVEN TOLD ME "YOU CAN'T MAKE A RECORD THAT WAY!"  IT WASN'T EASY, BUT, I DID MAKE A RECORD THAT WAY.   EACH SONG WAS IT'S OWN JOURNEY AND SO WAS THE ALBUM AS A WHOLE.  I LEARNED SO MUCH FROM THE PROCESS, THE SONGS THEMSELVES, THE MUSICIANS AND THE ENGINEERS.  IT WAS A GREAT EXPERIENCE.
